About Lancaster

Lancaster is a gorgeous northern city nestled just below the Lake District. It has a rich history dating back to Roman times and also features in the Domesday Book.

The City is geographically quite compact and very easy to walk around, with most inns, eateries and shops within a 10 minute walk of one another.

Christine spent her formative years here, arriving from Kilmarnock at the age of 12 and leaving for London at 26. Chris’ dad, Mac, and younger sister Alex live in nearby Heysham. Chris’ older sister Steff and her partner Rob now reside in northern Wales, and her brother Will has just started university at Keele.

Eddy, despite being a soft southerner, has fallen in love with Lancaster through regular visits over summers and christmases in the last three years. Having once assumed he’d never have reason to travel north of Watford, Eddy and Chris now own a home in Bedford and are planning their most special day together in Lancaster!

If you’re planning to make a weekend or mini-break of your time up north, some recommendations are below…

Lancaster sights

For history buffs, soon after leaving the train station you are met with the imposing Lancaster Castle, originally the sight of a Roman fort and serving many purposes since then.

From the castle, look south-east and you will see “England's grandest folly”… Ashton Memorial. This splendid building, situated in the lovely Williamson Park, was built by industrialist Lord Ashton in memory of his wife. It’s exactly the same age (1907) as Eddy and Chris’ house in Bedford! It is also the venue for our wedding ceremony… no doubt you will see why we picked it when you join us on 4th July!

If you want to let your hair down, Lancaster is the home of unique, cosy pubs like The Sun, The Water Witch, The Borough, and The Merchants. Enjoy Lancaster Brewery’s robust selection of ales and stouts at one of these spots, or at the Brewery itself!

The Lakes

Just 30 minutes in the car, or 13 minutes by train!

The Lake District is a gem of the north of England, home of Scafell Pike, the highest peak in the country at 3,210 feet.

If you’re looking to do a Lake District adventure before or after the wedding, consider staying in Windemere, Keswick or Ambleside.

While the 13 minute train (to Oxenholme) might sound appealing, you will find yourself very limited if you don’t have wheels.
